Success there can be translated into political power in Rome itself, as the mob always loves winners. The Julii have a commanding position in northern Italy that means they will be in vanguard of any struggle against barbarians. Which approach will lead to great power within Rome has still to be decided. This populist attitude to the common people puts the Julii at odds with the other great families. The Senate and the patrician classes need the plebeians to at least go along with their actions. The rule of Rome may lie with the Senate for now, but the Julii know that the people also have a say in government. The Julii have had to adjust to the realities of politics and power, and have cultivated their popularity with the common people. With the loss of position and status in the past, the other powerful factions of Rome look down (if only ever so slightly) on these 'new men' of Rome. The family's fortunes have declined and then risen over the centuries, so much so that they may almost be considered vaguely parvenu: upstarts newly arrived to wealth, power and authority.
They are a patrician family but one whose star has not always been in the ascendant. The Fates have not always been kind to the Julii. Not everyone gets a second chance to conquer the Roman Empire. Remastered to 4K with multiple improvements to visuals as well as refinements to gameplay, it’s time to revisit a true classic. It doesn't mean that I don't enjoy slaughtering the uncivilised heathens on the battlefield, but this is more for those that miss the gameplay of the original rather than new players.
They're still the optimal places to don your armour, pick up a javelin, and make yet another barbarian child fatherless. While I love the in-depth management of an empire, the modern games still offer a better experience, smoother and more polished. But, there are so many small quality of life improvements in the new titles that I don't think I would recommend this as a starting title for new players, despite the gameplay being solid, and the immense improvement in the graphical quality. While I struggle to understand why newer games have been stripped of more advanced insight, like what contributes and what negatively affects your public order in a region, Total War: Rome Remastered is a bit clunky, and annoying to watch your army take years to turn around on its heels to go off in a different direction (that can be skipped). The game has aged well, it really has, but it is also hard to shake its age. The Steam page says that 4K resolution depends on downloading an Enhanced Graphics Pack, that was not needed when I played, but that might be due to the fact that it was a special review version.
